News Night: University Strike, 44 Teacher Sexual Abuse Cases and EC Appointment Controversy

Tonight on News Night with Kenneth Gyasi and Fostina Sarfo on Joy 99.7 FM, we bring you the major stories shaping Ghana. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed universities to reopen, but the Ghana Association of University Administrators insists there will be no going back until the government meets its demands. Will the standoff over the strike be resolved? Meanwhile, junior staff at the University of Ghana are threatening industrial action over management’s plan to outsource campus security, warning that the move could threaten jobs and weaken accountability. We bring you the details and hear from university management. We also examine a disturbing report of 44 sexual abuse cases involving teachers and school heads since 2015, with eight school heads implicated. Half of the reported cases emerged in the last 13 months, raising fresh concerns about student safety following the interdiction of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster. Plus, civil society organisations are criticising the NPP and NDC over what they describe as inconsistent positions on partisan appointments to the Electoral Commission, calling for urgent reforms. Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has acknowledged the appointment of a person linked to the NDC to the Commission. What did President John Mahama and other NDC leaders say about such appointments while in opposition? Join the conversation on Ghana’s education challenges, student safety and the independence of the Electoral Commission.
