High court throws out Afenyo-Markin's GHS15m defamation suit against Sammy Gyamfi
The High Court has struck out Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s GH¢15 million defamation suit against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over alleged defamatory remarks. In its ruling on October 14, 2026, the court held that the writ of summons was defective because it failed to comply with mandatory procedural requirements for defamation cases under the High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2004 (C.I. 47). The lawsuit followed public exchanges between the two over reported US$1.7 billion losses associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. Afenyo-Markin had sued over remarks in which Gyamfi allegedly described him as an “extortionist”. The court’s decision concerned procedural defects in the lawsuit, not whether the disputed statements were defamatory. The ruling brings the proceedings under the defective writ to an end. #NewsDesk
