GRA Clarifies Digital VAT: GRA says no additional 20% VAT on existing digital subscriptions
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has clarified that its new digital VAT collection system will not impose an additional 20% tax on existing digital subscriptions whose prices already include the applicable taxes. Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on October 14, 2026, GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong explained that the new system is designed to improve the collection and monitoring of existing taxes on qualifying digital services, rather than introduce a new tax. The system, scheduled to take effect on October 15, will enable banks and payment service providers to collect and remit applicable taxes on qualifying digital transactions. The combined 20% charge comprises 15% VAT, a 2.5% National Health Insurance Levy and a 2.5% GETFund Levy. The GRA says about 92 foreign digital service providers are already remitting VAT, while approximately 100 additional providers that are not currently charging the applicable taxes will gradually be brought into the system. #NewsDesk
