EC Appointments Controversy: MFWA accuses NDC & NPP of lacking principle on partisan appointments
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what it describes as a lack of principle and consistency in their positions on partisan appointments to Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC). The controversy follows President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the EC on October 12, 2026. The NPP has called for Agbenyo’s appointment to be withdrawn, citing her previous involvement in NDC campaign activities. The government has defended the appointment, pointing to her qualifications and experience. The dispute has renewed debate about political neutrality, public confidence in the EC and the appointment process for officials responsible for overseeing Ghana’s elections. Both parties have faced criticism over their positions on EC appointments under different administrations. #NewsDesk
