Mahama urges Africa to break dependency cycle and take control of its resources

President Mahama made the call in an interview with TRT World on Friday, August 21, 2026, in which he linked Africa’s development challenges to the global order that emerged after the Second World War.“And so it’s in the interest of the whole world that Africa prospers and that Africa does well and that we’re able to overcome the challenges that we face in terms of growing economies, in terms of providing education for our people, in terms of healthcare and all that,” he added.

He said Africa’s continued reliance on external assistance, coupled with its limited control over the pricing and processing of its raw materials, had entrenched a dependency syndrome that the continent must now deliberately overcome.
