Advocacy group demands parliamentary sanctions over MP’s remarks to schoolgirl

“Regardless of whether the remarks were intended as humour, comments that romanticise or normalise the future marriage of a child are unacceptable,” the Zonta Clubs of Ghana said, adding that public figures carry a heightened responsibility to safeguard children’s dignity — one that “cannot be set aside as a joke”.

The organisation framed the incident within Ghana’s broader struggle against child marriage, a practice it says remained one of the most significant barriers to girls’ health, education, and economic empowerment.

In a statement, the women’s advocacy organisation said the remarks “normalise child marriage” and represented an unacceptable failure of duty by a public official entrusted with protecting children.
