Former Vice President
Mahamudu Bawumia
The economist VP who became the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer — and the face of 2028 talk.
Born Mahamudu Bawumia in 1963 in Tamale, he trained as an economist, earned a PhD, and rose to Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. As running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo, he became the NPP’s economic spokesman — famous for town-hall lectures packed with charts.
As Vice President from 2017 to 2025 he championed digitalisation: Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, digital addresses and paperless ports. Supporters credit him with dragging public services online; critics blame the ticket for economic hardship.
After leading the NPP into the 2024 election, his name dominates early 2028 conversation — pro-government hashtags trend regularly. Whether he leads the party again will be decided at NPP primaries.
