The national park suffers from perennial fire incidents that threaten major wildlife species, including some of the big five.

Threats to animals at the park caused by fire and poaching became one of the emphases during World Rhino Day, celebrated annually on September 22 to raise awareness for all five surviving rhino species and advocate for their protection.
