Teachers’ strike continues as talks end without deal; parties to reconvene today

The strike, declared on 25 September by GNAT, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), centres on three main demands: conclusion of negotiations for a new Collective Agreement (the previous one having expired), automatic placement of teachers who passed promotion examinations in December 2025 and February 2026 onto the correct salary scales with arrears effective January 2026, and implementation of the 20 per cent Deprived Area Allowance.
The nationwide industrial action by pre-tertiary teachers remains firmly in force after renewed negotiations between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the three major teacher unions ended without agreement.
General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah, said the unions are insisting on clear timelines from government on when outstanding processes will be completed and when affected teachers will be paid.
