Actress, producer, activist
Yvonne Nelson
Screen star turned citizen activist — from Princess Tyra to the Dumsor vigil.
Born in Accra in 1985, Yvonne Nelson broke through with Princess Tyra and became a fixture of Ghanaian and Nigerian cinema through the 2000s and 2010s — then took control behind the camera, producing hits like The Game, Single and Married and Fix Us through her own company.
In 2015 she did what few celebrities dared: mobilising the Dumsor Must Stop vigil against the crippling power crisis, marching with thousands (and Wanlov the Kubolor) to demand accountability from the Mahama government. It cemented her as Ghana’s most politically engaged star.
Her 2023 memoir I Am Not Yvonne Nelson — revealing, among others, a past relationship with Sarkodie and her search for her father — became a publishing sensation and national conversation. Actress, producer, activist, author: few Ghanaian public figures have reinvented themselves so completely.
