Azumah Nelson

Bukom’s professor of the sweet science — Ghana’s greatest boxer.

Born 1958, BukomBoxing

By GhanaSummary Newsroom

Born in 1958 in Bukom — Accra’s fabled boxing quarter that also produced Ike Quartey and Joshua Clottey — Azumah Nelson learned his craft in street gyms before representing Ghana at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and turning professional in 1979. His ring intelligence earned him the nickname “The Professor”.

In 1982 he nearly shocked the world, taking WBC featherweight king Salvador Sánchez to 15 rounds on short notice. Two years later he knocked out Wilfredo Gómez to claim that same WBC featherweight crown, then moved up to dominate the super-featherweight division through the late 1980s and early 1990s, including his epic rivalry with Jeff Fenech.

Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004, Nelson retired as a two-division world champion and Ghana’s most decorated fighter. His Azumah Nelson Fight Night and gym work in Bukom have kept him mentoring the next generation of Ghanaian champions.
