Parliament cannot be the solo police of Ghana’s purse — Bagbin

Bagbin also called on academic and civil society partners to continue providing timely, objective and policy-relevant research while holding public institutions, including Parliament, to high standards of transparency and accountability.

Speaking at the launch of the maiden Information-Sharing Session between Academia, Civil Society Organisations and Committees of Parliament in Accra on Wednesday, Bagbin said Parliament could no longer afford to operate in isolation from the research and evidence generated by academic institutions and the grassroots insights offered by civil society groups.

Bagbin explained that while Parliament exercises the constitutional mandate to make laws, approve national resources and hold the Executive accountable, academia generates the research and evidence needed to deepen understanding of national challenges, while civil society amplifies citizens’ voices and monitors the implementation of government programmes.
