Ghana government backs Constitutional abolition of death penalty   

“The death penalty is inconsistent with the constitutional right to life and with Ghana’s international human rights obligations,” he stated.

Presenting Government’s Position Paper on the Constitutional Review Committee’s report on Thursday, Dr Ayine said Articles 3, 13, 19 and 72 of the Constitution would be amended to remove references to the death penalty.

He said the legislation would elaborate existing constitutional protections, incorporate additional rights recommended by the Committee and give effect to Ghana’s obligations under international human rights treaties.
