FIDA-Ghana sounds alarm over shelter gaps for domestic violence survivors

The call extends beyond private donors to government itself as FIDA-Ghana is also urging the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to commit to predictable, sustained funding for the Domestic Violence Fund, including an increase of at least 30 per cent over 2023 baseline levels, with funds released within the first quarter of each fiscal year to avoid service disruptions.

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana) has raised concerns over what it describes as critical gaps in government funding for survivors of domestic violence, following an analysis of Ghana’s 2026 National Budget.

According to FIDA-Ghana’s findings, the Domestic Violence Fund has seen sharp swings in funding over the past several years, with allocations peaking at roughly GH¢2.
