Man City not ‘above the rules’, says No 10 after backlash to Burnham remarks

Man City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak (left) chats to Andy Burnham in 2019 at the Etihad Stadium, when he was mayor of Greater Manchester Downing Street has said Manchester City are not "above the rules" after Andy Burnham was criticised for his comments about the club's breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Burnham made his comments amid widespread shock in football about the scale of the independent commission's findings – and the strength of Premier League comments about City's actions.

In an interview on Wednesday with the BBC's political editor Chris Mason, Burnham - who was mayor of Greater Manchester until June - said he was "not getting directly involved in the process", saying it must be undertaken independently by the Premier League.
