A specialist in Internal Medicine and Therapeutics, Dr Nii Lante Okunka Blankson, has disclosed that high cholesterol levels can cause patients to develop black toes and feet, which could eventually lead to amputation if not treated early.
According to a report by gbcghanaonline.com on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Dr Blankson explained that the condition occurs when cholesterol buildup restricts blood flow to tissues and vessels in the legs, resulting in discoloration and pain.
He noted that the symptoms often develop gradually, making it difficult for patients to detect until the situation worsens. "The impaired supply of blood to tissues and vessels caused by the high cholesterol is what leads to the discoloration and pain, because blood flow does not get to the legs.
If not noticed and treated early, it could lead to amputation of the affected leg," he stated.
