Ashaiman MP and member of Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has criticised the state of three Ghana Police Service helicopters, describing them as "flying coffins" unfit for service.
Norgbey revealed that the aircraft, manufactured in 1976, has remained grounded since delivery in an interview on Joy FM's Newsnite. "They cannot be used because they were not fit for purpose… a 1976 aircraft is a flying coffin," he said, warning they are unsafe for modern policing duties.
The issue has resurfaced amid public debate over why police helicopters were not deployed in last week's fatal military helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives, including those of the Defence and Environment Ministers.
Norgbey also questioned the fate of three new helicopters promised by President Akufo-Addo in October 2021.
