General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev Dr Stephen Y Wengam, has confirmed reports on the reason President John Dramani Mahama did not attend the event at Obuasi at the centre of the helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of 8 people, including 2 cabinet ministers.

Speaking to his congregation on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Rev Wengam confirmed that President Mahama was supposed to attend a programme of the church.

He said that the president initially informed him that he was not going to be able to attend the event because he had other engagements, including a trip to Ivory Coast.

The pastor said that he told the person who informed him of the president's decision not to attend the event that he "would not accept" his decision and asked his prayer team to pray over the matter. "I called Rev Bawa, and he said, 'The President said he is not coming,' and I said, 'I don't accept it.
