Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a firm warning to satellite television provider DSTV, demanding a reduction in its subscription prices or risk having its broadcasting licence suspended. Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, the Minister disclosed that he had taken formal steps, including writing to the National Communications Authority (NCA), to begin the licence suspension process if DSTV fails to comply by Wednesday, August 7."I have directed the NCA to act swiftly.
If by the 7th of August DSTV has not complied, their broadcasting licence will be suspended," Mr George said during his address.
His directive follows correspondence from DSTV defending its current pricing by attributing it to broader economic factors, particularly the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi. "DSTV claims the Ghanaian Cedi has depreciated by over 200% in the last eight years, and therefore, they cannot reduce their prices," the Minister noted.
However, Mr George was not convinced by the company's justification, stressing that Ghanaians had borne the brunt of excessive fees for far too long."My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people.
