The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr , has attributed the party's defeat in the 2024 presidential election to the tribe of its candidate for the election and the Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

According to him, Bawumia being a Mamprusi caused the NPP a lot of disaffection in many parts of the country because of the chieftaincy conflict between the Mamprusi and Kusasis, making it lose a lot of votes.

He claimed that parliamentary seats that the NPP won convincingly with former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were lost because of the tribe of its presidential candidate.

He, however, noted that the vice president was not to blame because he was just a "victim of circumstances." "President Kufuor won all NPP votes in Kusasi, and President Akufo-Addo also did the same thing, but because the fight is between two tribes (Mamprusis and Kusasis) and we elected a flagbearer from one of them, we lost in Oti Region, Upper East, Upper West, and the Northern Region. "We lost all our seats because of the candidate we presented (Dr Mahamudu Bawumia), and he could be a victim of circumstance and not his fault, but the timing didn't favour him," he said.
