Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has stated that Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie-the party's candidate in the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun-was part of the decision to boycott the election and had fully endorsed it before unexpectedly participating in the contest.

Speaking in the aftermath of the closely contested rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025, Mr.

Mohammed clarified that the party leadership had resolved not to participate in the election because, according to them, the NPP had already won the December 7, 2024 election, which the rerun was meant to address. "We said that we are not participating in the election.

The reason is that we have won the election so we will not participate," he stated on Channel One TV's The Big Issue on Saturday July 12.
