The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly is expected to meet officials of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) on Wednesday, July 9, to discuss ongoing electricity disconnection exercises in the metropolis.
The Assembly raised concerns over the timing of the operation, which is reportedly being carried out late at night despite growing security concerns in the area.
The disconnection exercise, which targets illegal connections and power theft, comes during recent violent clashes between rival youth groups.
In an interview with Citi News on Sunday, July 6, 2025, Amadu Mustapha Zakari, the Public Relations Officer for the Assembly, stated that while the Assembly supports efforts to address power theft, it believes the current approach could compromise public safety. "We intend that the timing of the disconnection exercise is challenging and very risky.
