Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo, Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey, has defended the recent increase in the Energy Sector Levy, describing it as a necessary emergency measure to prevent a looming fuel crisis and stabilise Ghana's troubled energy sector.

His comments come amid widespread public backlash over the passage of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which introduces a GH₵1 increase in the levy on petroleum products.

The move has been met with concern by citizens already grappling with a high cost of living.

In an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday June 5, he underscored that the levy was passed under a certificate of urgency because the government urgently requires funds to address critical shortfalls in the energy supply chain.' According to him, the price build-up for electricity has since excluded liquid fuel costs, placing the burden solely on the government to finance fuel needed for power generation.
