After nearly three years of legal proceedings, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for Juaben in the Ashanti Region, Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, has been acquitted and discharged by a Kumasi High Court in a high-profile bribery case linked to his failed bid to become Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The case, which attracted national attention, stemmed from a viral video that surfaced in 2021 showing Sarfo-Kantanka angrily confronting assembly members and demanding a refund of monies he claimed to have distributed-allegedly to secure their votes for his confirmation as MCE.
His nomination, however, was rejected for a second time, prompting suspicions of attempted bribery.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor subsequently launched an investigation, resulting in 26 charges of corruption being filed against Sarfo-Kantanka, who was accused of offering inducements to assembly members of the Juaben Municipal Assembly.
The trial officially began on October 20, 2022, and saw three assembly members take the stand as prosecution witnesses.
