Editor of The Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, has described Ghana's laws on "causing fear and panic" and "false publication" as outdated, vague, and dangerous, urging their immediate repeal to protect democratic freedoms and free speech.
Speaking on Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 26, Darko condemned the recent arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Kumi was arrested after submitting a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, in which he raised concerns that could potentially affect the credibility of the committee probing the Chief Justice.
In his petition, Kumi alleged that Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, lawyer for the petitioner Daniel Ofori, on May 15, 2025-the same day as the committee's inaugural sitting.
