The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called for the immediate declaration of a targeted state of emergency in all areas affected by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The appeal was made during a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House.

The bishops raised concerns about the devastating impact of galamsey on water bodies, forests, farmlands, and the health of local communities.
