Following the devastating downpour on Sunday, May 18, which caused severe flooding in Accra, Kumasi, and other major urban centres, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a public advisory, warning of more intense rainfall and the risk of flash floods in the coming weeks.
The heavy rains displaced thousands, submerged entire neighbourhoods, and claimed at least three lives in Adenta, highlighting Ghana's growing vulnerability as the rainy season gathers momentum.
Speaking on Joy FM on Monday, May 19, Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office at GMet, cautioned that more severe weather is likely ahead. "We are getting to the peak of the rainy season - we are yet to enter into it," she said. "So by the close of next week into the first week of June, or towards the end, we are likely to be getting more of these rains.
