The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for the immediate suspension or dismissal of the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, for allegedly dolling out bundles of United States Dollars in a viral video to a Patricia Oduro, alias Nana Agradaa. The Minority also called on President John Mahama to apologize to Ghanaians for the insult, the act have generated, and full investigation into the source of the dollar bundles displayed in the viral video. The Minority at media briefing addressed by the Ranking Member of Finance, Dr Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, yesterday in Accra, said such display of financial recklessness was not only a betrayal of the public trust, but "a slap in the face of millions of Ghanaians currently grappling with the devastating effect of the Cedi inflation and the unbearable cost of living."He stated that the matter while outrageous, sadly encapsulates the arrogance, hypocrisy, and gross insensitivity that have come to define the NDC government under President Mahama.Dr Abdul-Kabiru noted that the act was being committed by someone who had in the past championed populist rhetoric about economic discipline, Cedi loyalty, and anti-corruption.He said that though businesses across the country were being suffocated by dollar shortage and an erratic exchange rate, a government official with access to state resources was seen splashing dollars.Dr Abdul-Kabiru further indicated that as the cedi has shown signs of recovery, appreciating from GH¢14.15 to approximately GH¢13.14 per Dollar as of May 9, 2025, this incident undermined efforts to stabilise the economy. He said the casual distribution of foreign currency by a high-ranking official sends a message of indifference to the struggles of ordinary Ghanaians. The Ranking Member, who is also the Member of Parliament for Walewale, indicated that it was ridiculous to suggest that Mr Gyamfi did no wrong with the opulence and naked betrayal of public mandate, amidst the launch of a Code of Conduct for appointees by the President.Dr Abdul-Kabiru said the code requires government appointees to place the national interest above personal interests, eschew opulence, and be accountable for the use of public funds, among others. Moreover, he said, "Sammy has raped these requirements by the President, God has a way of testing the faith and integrity of men.
The integrity and faith of President John Mahama in his own rules have been put to the test.
It's a watershed moment for him to keep true to his words."Dr Abdul-Kabiru underlined that other financial and monetary laws have been challenged by the actions of Mr Gyamfi, citing the violation of Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723) that proscribes under Section 3(1) & (4) a person engaging in the business of dealing in foreign exchange without a license issued under this Act without written authorisation from the Bank of Ghana is illegal. He said "the penalties for such violations include a fine of up to 700 penalty units or a prison term of not more than 18 months, or both."Dr Mahama said the defence put up by Mr Gyamfi and his supporters characterised the opulence as a generous gift to the needy, saying Nana Agradaa could not have wished for a better benefactor than a man who has been tasked with the custody of all the gold produced in the country.
