Isaac Adongo has commended the government's recent shift in fiscal policy that prioritizes taking more from the wealthy to support programs targeting Ghana's underprivileged.
Speaking on State of Affairs on GHOne TV, Adongo emphasized that building confidence and trust in government is critical to managing the economy-especially when it comes to taxation. "You see, confidence and trust is very key in the management of any economy," he said. "One of the challenges of Ghanaians when it comes to paying taxes is the fact that Ghanaians don't believe that we are taxing them fairly… and that they can trust us that when even they give us the money we will spend wisely." According to Adongo, the latest national budget signals a "paradigm shift" in approach.
He explained that the Finance Minister and the Cabinet have made a deliberate decision to redistribute wealth by taxing the rich more heavily in order to fund initiatives that directly benefit the poor. "There has been a paradigm shift where in this budget the Minister for Finance together with the Cabinet of Ghana pointed to a clear decision to take more from the rich to fund activities that benefit the poor," Adongo noted.
He pointed to recent government initiatives as evidence of this new direction, citing pro-poor programs that have already been rolled out.
