Convener of the Affirmative Action Law Coalition, Sheila Minkah-Premo Esq., has called for the creation of a Gender Equity Committee under the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection to oversee the effective implementation of the Affirmative Action Law.

Speaking at an International Women's Day celebration and awards event organized by the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), she emphasized the committee's role in ensuring the law's enforcement at both national and local levels. "One of the key things which can be done to ensure the implementation of the Affirmative Action Law is the setting up of what they call, under the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Act 2024, Act 1121, a Gender Equity Committee under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to lead implementation," she said.

Meanwhile, NALAG President Alfred Asiedu Adjei lamented the low representation of women in leadership and referenced a World Economic Forum report indicating it would take about 130 years to achieve gender equity worldwide. "World Economic Forum (Global Gender Gap Report) shows that at the current pace, it will take about 130 years to attain full gender parity.

In Ghana, while women make up about 50 percent of the population, their representation in governance and decision-making is alarmingly low.
