Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that 150 Ghanaians are currently in detention across various centers in the United States, awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry.

Speaking in Parliament, Okudzeto Ablakwa provided an update on the situation based on information from the Washington mission. "Currently, there are 150 Ghanaians in detention across various centres in the US who are awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry," the Minister stated.

He noted that 50 individuals have received final deportation orders from the court, with deportations expected to occur by mid-2025. "The remaining 100 cases are either under appeal or have been dismissed," he added.

The Minister also highlighted specific instances where the Ghanaian authorities intervened on behalf of their citizens. "Representations have been made to US authorities on behalf of one Ghanaian on grounds of ill health, and he has been released to seek medical care," Ablakwa explained.
