Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has raised concerns over the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) management of funds, revealing that the state-owned power distributor had operated 99 bank accounts across 19 banks.

While describing the situation as inefficient, he clarified that a complete closure of these accounts is not a viable option.

Speaking on TV3's Hot Issues monitored by MyNewsGH, Jinapor explained the government's move to establish a single treasury account to improve financial oversight. "When you talk of a single treasury account, it's not necessarily closing every account.

All you are saying is that anywhere money lands, it should be swept to one account… By the end of the month, we know exactly how much was collected." He noted that while multiple accounts were inefficient, some would be maintained for operational purposes, especially for customers in areas without digital payment access. "You cannot close all the accounts unless you are asking people to pay everything through an app.
