Vincent Ekow Assafuah has criticized President John Dramani Mahama's directive to AngloGold Ashanti Mines to cover the medical bills of injured persons and assist with the burial costs of the deceased.
According to the Member of Parliament for Old-Tafo, Mahama's call was "unfair" and lacked context.
Speaking on UTV monired by MyNewsGH, Assafuah recounted the circumstances leading to the tragic incident, which saw illegal miners clash with military personnel stationed at the mine. "AGA was at their mine unprovoked and were attacked by these illegal miners who we cannot tell where they got their bravado from," Assafuah stated, questioning the root cause of such reckless behavior.
The incident, which took place on January 18, 2025, saw a group of around 60 illegal miners breaching the mine's security, forcing their way into the Deep Decline area.
