Six presidential candidates, including Dr.

Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have signed a pact to combat illegal mining ahead of the December elections.

The agreement also includes the presidential candidates of the Liberal Party of Ghana, the All People's Congress, and independent candidates Alan Kyerematen and John Twum Barimah Adu.

At a press conference, Ken Ashigbey, the convenor of the coalition behind the initiative, described the pact as a crucial first step in addressing illegal mining, or galamsey.
