According to , a demyelinating disease is any condition that causes damage to the protective covering (myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve fibers in your brain, the nerves leading to the eyes (optic nerves) and spinal cord.

When the myelin sheath is damaged, nerve impulses slow or even stop, causing neurological problems.

Based on information from a health website, demyelinating diseases do not have a cure, however, disease-modifying therapies have the potential to change the course of the disease in certain patients.

These therapies can be combined with symptomatic treatment.

The symptoms and advancement of demyelinating diseases differ among individuals.
