High Court Sentences Chairman Wontumi to 20 Years in Prison for Illegal Mining-Related Offences
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment after the Accra High Court found him guilty of offences linked to illegal mining activities.
According to the prosecution, Chairman Wontumi, in his capacity as owner and controlling director of Akonta Mining Company Limited, permitted mining activities to be carried out on the concession without obtaining the mandatory approval from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
Although the law provides for a prison sentence of between 15 and 25 years for the offences, the court settled on a 20-year jail term after considering the circumstances of the case.
