Beyond Installed Capacity: The Reliability Question in Ghana’s Energy Mix

What Ghana Needs Next As Ghana’s electricity demand continues to rise, the country will need a combination of competitively procured new generation capacity; reliable supplies of indigenous natural gas; expanded renewable-energy generation and storage; stronger transmission and distribution infrastructure; improved sector finances and payment discipline; effective maintenance of existing generating plants; and sufficient reserve capacity to respond to unexpected disruptions.

The Energy Commission, in its 2026 outlook, estimates that Ghana will have significant dependable generation capacity available to meet demand, however, the commission also acknowledges that planned maintenance, unexpected technical outages due to aged power plants, fuel-supply constraints and other operational challenges reduce the amount of electricity actually available at a given moment.

Ghana’s electricity mix includes hydropower, thermal generation fuelled primarily by natural gas, solar power and limited electricity imports.
