Managing Director of Third Eyecare and Vision Centre, Dr Kwame Oben-Nyarko, has firmly dismissed the long-standing myth that granulated cassava, commonly known as gari, causes vision problems which could lead to blindness.
Many have come to believe the misconception that gari is a major cause of vision loss, hence avoiding the staple, out of fear that it could damage their eyesight.
However, during his appearance on the GTV Breakfast Show on August 18, 2025, Dr Oben-Nyarko highlighted the nutritional benefits of gari and reassured fans of the popular staple that it poses no harm to eye health. "Gari contains high amounts of carbohydrates that provide significant energy requirements.
It is a staple food for many, and I encourage everyone to continue eating their gari without fear," he said.
