The Member of Parliament representing the Tamale South Constituency in the Northern Region, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has honoured his commitment by disbursing GH¢188,000.00 to 47 medical students as part of the scholarship programme established by the late MP for Tamale Central, Dr Murtala Ibrahim Mohammed. The students are enrolled in various universities across the country, pursuing their studies in medicine and are currently continuing students.Mr Iddrisu made this commitment during the final funeral rites of the late MP, with the intention of sustaining the sponsorship for the 47 medical students. The students, who benefited from this initiative, had made their appeal to him during the funeral of the late Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala in Tamale.Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who was the MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment Science and Technology, died alongside with seven other government officials when the military helicopter in which they were travelling, crashed in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region two weeks ago.The Chief Executive Officer of the Haruna Institute, Mr Abdul Ganiu Sandoo, participated in a brief ceremony to present payment receipts for the fees to the beneficiary students on behalf of the Tamale South Member of Parliament, Mr Haruna Iddrisu.During the presentation, the CEO said the initiative was part of the ongoing efforts by the MP in his constituency, and it would significantly aid the students in continuing their educational pursuits.Mr Sandoo further noted that the payment also served to honour and commemorate the legacy of the late Dr Murtala, as well as to fulfill the positive legacy he had initiated in his constituency. He emphasised that the late Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala was an individual who placed a high priority on education as a crucial element for the people in his constituency. The CEO indicated that the students would continue to receive their fees until they completed their medical training programmes.Furthermore, he mentioned that Mr Iddrisu had chosen to pay tribute not only through words but also by taking tangible action, personally assuming the responsibility to cover the school fees for these 47 medical students, whose fees had been fully funded by the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed."The initiative to sponsor the medical training of students in the Tamale Central Constituency by the late Member of Parliament, Dr Murtala, aims to help bridge the 'Doctor-Patient' gap in the Northern Region and enhance healthcare delivery," Mr Sandoo noted. He added that this gesture was not merely about financial assistance but also about investing in hope and the well-being of individuals across the constituencies in the region.According to him, this initiative was also about preserving the selfless vision of the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, ensuring that every young person pursued higher education and could serve humanity throughout Northern Ghana and beyond. He remarked that these medical students represent the future healthcare professionals, doctors, and surgeons of the nation, poised to serve this country for generations, honoring both Mr Haruna Iddrisu and the late Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala. FROM YAHAYA NUHU NADAA, TAMALE
