The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the escalating problem of illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, through a comprehensive strategy.
Following a meeting between the minister, Samuel Jinapor, and key stakeholders, all regional ministers have been directed to intensify enforcement efforts against illegal mining activities within their respective regions.
Illegal mining which has become a national concern, has prompted religious groups, professionals and other associations, to call on the government to take immediate actions to stop the menace and protect the environment.
The Lands Ministry in a statement on Wednesday noted that the regional ministers have been mandated to intensify enforcement actions within their various jurisdictions to contain incidents of illegal small-scale mining. "Additionally, the Minerals Commission will enhance our reformative efforts, particularly, through ramping up the establishment of responsible and legal community mining schemes which have regard to the preservation of our nation's environment and landscape. "The government remains steadfast and committed to continue to restore order and ensure that mining activities are conducted sustainably and legally in the national interest.
We entreat all and sundry, to support this effort to enable us to protect our environment, preserve our water bodies, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come," the statement further said.
