GFA President Kurt Okraku says the association is committed to reversing the trend of mass player departures by making the Ghana Premier League an attractive and competitive destination for footballers. "Why should Ghanaian footballers have to leave to be appreciated, when we can make this league a destination in itself?" he said. "We may not be able to match the multimillion-dollar deals offered by external clubs, but we can make our Clubs so attractive that our players will face a difficult decision when faced with the prospect of leaving Ghana." Okraku was speaking at the launch of a new business model for the domestic top-flight, anchored by a GHâµ1 million annual support package for each Premier League club.
The funding forms part of a broader strategy, powered by a production and commercial rights agreement with Adesa Production Limited, to boost club viability and competitiveness. "Whether you place first or twentieth, your effort, your performance, your participation will yield financial benefit," he explained. "This brings meaning to every game and keeps the competitive spirit alive throughout the season." The GFA believes the new structure, centred on consistent funding, better infrastructure, and improved media visibility, can help retain talent and increase the league's appeal to foreign players and investors.
