The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN)-Ghana has urged the country to reflect on the contributions of African women, past and present, in shaping societies.Consequently, it has also appealed to traditional and religious leaders, as well as other relevant stakeholders, to use their influence to challenge harmful norms and champion the value of women's leadership in communities. The AWLN-Ghana, made the appeal in a press statement issued and signed by its chairperson, Dr Charity Binka, and copied The Ghanaian Times yesterday, in commemoration of the 2025 African Women Day celebration, under the theme, "Rooted in Greatness: Celebrating Women of African Descent."According to AWLN-Ghana, the celebration of the 2025 African Women Day was important as women from African descent continued to transform lives and redefine leadership in various ways.It said that the impact of women from African descent stretched across generations and borders and was grounded in courage, dignity, and collective progress. Some African Women Leaders Network with their awardsThe AWLN-Ghana said that despite the rise of African women, they continue to face a number of challenges, including unequal access to resources, underrepresentation in decision-making spaces, and systemic barriers to economic and social mobility."Ghana made history by electing her first female Vice President in the 2024 elections.
However, the representation of women at all levels of decision-making remains very low," the AWLN-Ghana bemoaned. It, therefore, said that it looked forward to the full implementation of the Affirmative Action Act to help create a just society for women to thrive."For women in Ghana, the African Women's Day reaffirms their rightful place in the country's development and aligns powerfully with the goals of the Affirmative Action Act, which seeks to create a just society where women and men participate equally in shaping the nation's future," the statement said."We therefore look forward to the full implementation of the Affirmative Action Act in the allocation of resources, appointment to all decision-making bodies to reflect gender balance in accordance with the law," it added. The AWLN-Ghana said that it also recognised the role of civil society organisations and the media in throwing spotlight on the issues women faced in the country.Additionally, the AWLN-Ghana said that it remained committed to mobilising African women across generations and sectors to amplify their voice and deepen their impact."We will continue to work in solidarity with partners across the continent and beyond to ensure that the greatness we celebrate today becomes the foundation for an even greater tomorrow," it said.BY TIMES REPORTER
