The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Walewale following a disruption during the vote-counting process in the ongoing re-run of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primary in the Walewale Constituency.
One person, identified as Kamara Bawah, has been arrested for causing damage to some ballot papers.
The suspect is in custody assisting Police investigation.
Security has since been strengthened within Walewale and its environs to ensure law and order.
Meanwhile, voting had ended, and the sorting of ballots was underway when police officers unexpectedly removed the ballot boxes from the room.
According to the chairman of the election committee, an unknown individual caused the disruption, leading to the police intervention.
He confirmed the arrest of the individual responsible for the chaos in an interview with Channel One News.
One of the parliamentary aspirants, Dr Mahama Tia Kabiru, expressed his deep disappointment with how the process unfolded, further casting a shadow over the primary election in the Walewale constituency. "This is a very pathetic situation.
We pride ourselves in democracy.
We always claim and boast of same that we are the beacon of democracy.
But the basis upon which liberal democracy is founded, NPP prides itself in that. "A democratic process has been organised, sorting was done and someone out of fear knowing that there is imminent defeat, has decided to disrupt the process.
We know the person.
I have raised issues. "This morning you remember the chaotic situation that visited the accreditation by the same person.
So, if someone tells me he doesn't know that person, then I am afraid… He has been arrested; the former constituency chairman of Yagaba Kubori, Akamara Bawa. "You tell me you don't know him, you don't know someone who has been on the campaign platform campaigning for the MP.
Such a person has abused the processes, disrupted the processes, I just hope the police will let the law take its course," he stated.
