Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has refuted claims that she acted improperly during the recent parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.   The ex-Fisheries Minister insists her use of pepper spray at the polling station was a defensive response to a violent attack. The incident, which took place during last week's polls, was captured in disturbing video footage showing Hawa Koomson being pushed to the ground and assaulted by a group of individuals.

In the midst of the chaos, she deployed pepper spray in an attempt to protect herself but was eventually stomped in the groin area before security personnel intervened.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Wednesday, July 16, Hawa Koomson explained that her presence at the polling station was peaceful and that she had no intention of causing trouble.

She emphasized that the pepper spray was something she carried routinely for personal protection, especially during election periods. "I always carry it for protection," she said, referencing a traumatic experience from a previous election where her son was stabbed during political violence. "That incident changed everything for me," she added, noting that it reshaped how she approaches safety during politically tense moments.
