A former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, Victoria Bright, has called for decisive action to tackle the proliferation of illegal firearms in Ghana.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on June 30, 2025, Bright expressed deep concern over the increasing access to and use of firearms by civilians, particularly in the wake of the recent conflict in Nkwanta in the Oti Region. "There is a need for a clampdown on illegal firearms.
It is not ideal for citizens to possess and use firearms at will," she stated, stressing that such a trend poses a significant threat to national security and peaceful coexistence.
Her call comes as the Ghana Education Service (GES) recently ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region.
