The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, are set to appear before Parliament on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, to respond to urgent concerns about the lack of life jackets in communities dependent on water transport.
Parliament is expected to demand detailed strategies to improve safety on water bodies, especially in areas where river crossings are a daily necessity.
The ministerial briefing follows the tragic drowning of seven students from Lawra Senior High School while crossing the Black Volta River on June 13, 2025.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, addressing the House, confirmed that the two ministers would outline government interventions to prevent a recurrence. "Following the statement made by the MP for Lawra on Tuesday, June 17, regarding the loss of seven students, the Speaker directed the Ministers for the Interior and Energy and Green Transition to brief the House on the measures being implemented to avoid such tragedies.
