The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over what he described as the "desecration" of the Independence Square by a foreign gay couple.

In a strongly worded letter dated Thursday, June 26, 2025, the MP expressed deep concern over recent images circulating on social media which allegedly show the foreign gay couple in photographs at Ghana's Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum-sites he described as "sacred" and symbolic of the country's struggle for freedom. "These spaces are sacred.

They are not to be turned into platforms for promoting acts that are fundamentally alien to our cultural, moral, and religious values," Assafuah stated.

The MP accused the individuals involved of using national symbols to promote an agenda that, in his view, contradicts the moral conscience of the nation.
