Staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA), under the Divisional Executive Council of the Public Services Workers' Union, have begun an indefinite strike today, June 24, 2025.
Speaking to Channel One News in an interview, the General Secretary of the Public Services Workers' Union, Bernard Adjei, explained that the action follows the Ministry of Finance's failure to provide a clear timeline or commitment for the payment of the Operational Support Allowance, the only allowance received by NIA staff to supplement their low basic salaries.
According to him, although the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has approved the payment, the Ministry's continued delay has left workers with no option but to withdraw their services. "We have made several efforts, including efforts at the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission , which then wrote to the Finance Ministry to confirm that our agreement was ratified and that we deserve the payment.
They had verified that the compensation budget for NIA 2025, which has been approved, is inclusive of these allowances. "However, finance has scaled to direct the controller to pay us, and at a meeting yesterday, the meeting of the finance team told us it was not budgeted for which is contrary to what we knew.
