Ebo Buckman has proposed the creation of a constitutionally empowered, apolitical body to oversee Ghana's forest protection efforts, arguing that environmental stewardship must be removed from the pressures of partisan politics.
In an open letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, the member of the Movement for Change emphasized the need for systemic reforms that insulate forest conservation from political interference, lobbying for the establishment of an Independent Forest Protection Ombudsman or Green Czar. "To permanently safeguard our natural heritage, forest protection must be removed from political hands," Buckman wrote."Let professionals lead this charge, backed by law, insulated from interference." He argued that politicians are often caught in the tension between appeasing their constituents and enforcing unpopular but necessary environmental protections.
According to him, empowering a neutral authority with constitutional backing would allow for consistent, science-led forest management across administrations.
