The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, has stated that illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, cannot be completely eradicated from Ghana's extractive landscape.
Instead, he is urging the government and stakeholders to adopt a long-term policy framework that addresses the root causes of environmental degradation linked to the activity.
Addressing the media, Ambassador Defa called for a pragmatic, multi-sectoral solution that takes into account the realities on the ground. "To my understanding, you can never eliminate those small mines.
These small mines have illegal activities involved in them," he said.
